Just Call Me Annie Oakley

A few weekends ago the hubs and I skipped a few states over to spend a long weekend at my parents vacation place in West Virginia. Perched on a mountain side, outside a small river-side town, their cabin is the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of the DC area.

It’s also the perfect place to do a a little skeet shooting. Believe me, no one in West Virginia even blinks when a gun goes off. Plus there is plenty of open, human-less space to practice safely.

My dad, B, and I got out the family collection of shot guns {a few belonged to my great grandparents} and the clay pigeon thrower. We threw on our safety gear {I even have pink ear protection} and we were ready to shoot!

Now, I am no Annie Oakley, but when it comes to target parctice, I’m halfway decent. Send a bright orange clay disk up into the air, however, and I turn into a hot mess with a gun {don’t worry, I’m a safe hot mess}. I don’t think I hit a single one, but it sure was fun to try!

Good times!

Do you shoot?

Napa and Sonoma (aka the best places on Earth)

I don’t think it’s a secret that I love my wine. It was a sad day when I decided to give it up for a while in the hopes of dropping a few pounds and feeling healthier {luckily the sacrifice paid off}. So I was beyond excited when B and I decided to tack a few days onto my work trip to San Fran and visit wine country.

I was a little nervous though. Despite having visited Virginia wine country a handful of times {and drinking enough wine over the years to make me feel like a sommelier}, I am no vino expert. Would we be accepted in Napa and Sonoma, the official wine capital of the country, or would we be snubbed for not sniffing and sipping in the right way? Would we be looked down up for not buying $100 bottles at every winery?

After our very first stop at Chimney Rock Vineyards, I was put completely at ease. Napa was not all hoity-toity. People didn’t expect you to be a wine expert or spend thousands. Everyone was so warm and welcoming; eager to help you in any way. There was also a camaraderie between the vineyards, not a competition. Tasting room employees were happy to recommend other places to go.

I found the whole area to be enchanting…something about the rolling hills, the colors of the folliage and the look of the sky…I was in love right away. I’ve been to many places where I turn to B and say “let’s move here” but this time I really meant it. We WILL buy a place there.

We spent time in both Napa and Sonoma Valleys. It’s fairly easy to travel between the two and the scenery and quaint towns along the way makes any time in the car entertaining!

A few of my favorite things:

  • The view from Sterling Vineyards
  • Block 4 and SLV wine at Stags Leap
  • The friendly staff at Silver Oak
  • The gorgeous, humidity-free weather
  • The Sonoma’s cute town square
  • Every twist and turn of the roads
  • The veggie burger at Market in St. Helena in Napa Valley (handmade and topped with fresh mozzarella and avocado)
  • The pizza at Russian River Brewery
  • B, the resident beer snob in our house, got to drink one of the top beers in the world at Russan River Brewery (it’s not available near us)!

I don’t think it’s hard to see why we loved it so much. We’ve already booked our flights to go back at the very end of October!! We’ll also be driving down the coast a bit to to see Santa Barbara and visit my sis in LA. I’m counting down the days!

Guest Posting Today – Traveling the Healthy Way

Today is a GREAT day! I am guest posting on my dear friend, and neighbor (we share a townhouse wall!), Tina’s blog Like Ordinary Life.

Have a great Tuesday!

The San Francisco Treat

Despite what my last post about my love for the Golden Gate Bridge might suggest, we did do things on our recent trip other than pose with the beautiful red structure. In fact, we packed a lot into our long weekend in San Fran. In between attending Marathon events for work, we walked, we saw, we ate, we drank, we had a blast.

I could easily write multiple posts about everything we did, but I’ll let the pictures do most of the talking {warning, 5,000 photos ahead}!

We turned a long 6+ mile run into a sightseeing adventure:

Hyde Street {aka the hill from hell, yes we ran up all the way up from the water}

Lombard Street {curviest street in America}

 I made Bill drive me around town on a Full House tour:

Alamo Square {where part of the opening sequence was filmed}

The hubs is awesome and we stayed at the Ritz Carlton on our last night in the city:

Feather bed amazingness!

The weather was very cool and I got to break out some of my Fall clothing:

Boots!

We ate lots of delicious street food:

Papusas cooking on the sidewalk at midnight {heaven}

Yup, it was pretty much a perfect trip!

Part 2 of our trip to Napa and Sonoma Valley’s coming soon!

Oh, and yes, the title of this post is an homage to Rice a Roni {yum}!

Greetings from the Golden Gate

 I have been looking at a picture of my parent’s in front of the Golden Gate Bridge all my life. It’s such a sweet picture with a beautiful backdrop. I was actually there, just not in the picture, but at only 3-years-old I have a very vague recollection. So, I have wanted to go {back} and see this beautiful sight for myself (and actually remember it) for a loooong time (my obsession with Full House in the 90′s may have had something to do with it too).

A few days ago I finally got my wish! And boy oh boy, it did not disappoint.

 {Ok, I promise this is the same view. That big white “cloud” behind the hubs, and I, is hiding the bridge}

We stopped by the Golden Gate twice, once on our way into San Fran and once on our way out. The weather was misty and overcast the first time, but there was very little fog on the bridge. On our second stop, it was a beautiful, sunny day, but a steady stream of fog swept off the hills and over those beautiful golden gates.

While I was gazing in awe at this beautiful structure {and the stunning scenery around it} I actually heard someone say “it’s just a bridge”! Well, yes of course, it’s a bridge, but just a bridge? I don’t think so.

I’m Back!

Hello friends! I’m back from my adventures on the west coast!

We had such an amazing time in San Francisco and Napa Valley. I couldn’t begin to describe every little detail, but I will do a recap post later this week!

For now, I’ll leave you with a picture from the trip {I think it pretty much sums up some of the stunning scenery}.

P.S. I hope you like the new look of the blog!

Sweet Summertime

Well, it’s official. Summer is really here and the East Coast got to celebrate the start of the season with oppressing 100+ degree heat. I’m really not complaining though. I could do without so much humidity, but I LOVE summer.

Every year I think about what my summer goals are, but the days just seem to fly by and that whole “big girl job thingy” can really cramp your summer plans. Last year B didn’t return from Afghanistan till July, and at that point it felt like the season had already gotten away from us. But this summer…

 *THIS SUMMER IS GOING TO BE DIFFERENT*

 I’ll be checking off each one of these…

 What’s on your summer to do list?

Salt Air

Memorial Day weekend starts today (hooray)! It seems all anyone can talk/think about is the beach and I am no exception! Sadly, I am not actually going to the beach this weekend, but that doesn’t mean I can’t dream of my toes in the sand and the salt air in my hair. If I put on my Jimmy Buffett Pandora station, and close my eyes, it’s almost like I’m there…

Growing up I spent 12 consecutive summers going to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. I’ve been to a lot of beaches all over the world (Mexico, Florida, Greece, Italy and California), but nothing can replace my love for, and sentimental attachment to, the OBX. It’s still one of my favorite places on earth. I think a trip back is definitely in order!

Does it get any better than this?

To all of you heading to the beach this weekend…I hate you…I mean…have a great time!

Happy Holiday Weekend to all!

Ciao Italia

Sooooooo…there is a slight possibility that I may be going to Italy this summer. Yes, I know, super exciting, right?

This would not be my first jaunt to the land of pasta, as you may remember, I studied abroad in Rome for a semester in college. All this new excitement about the (very) slight possibility of returning got me thinking. Where in the hech are all my pics from Italy?? I have a great scrapbook I put together, but I new somewhere on the world wide web were hundreds of other pictures. During my time abroad I loaded all of my pics onto a photo sharing sight so my friends and family could see them. What site was it? What was my log in? To make a long story short, after a few days of wracking my brain and communicating back and forth with Webshots’ customer service team, I found them!

And holy moly had I forgotten just how freakin’ amazing Italy is! {I could go on endlessly about my fabulous host mom, who spoke zero English, the amazing wine, the unbelievable scenery, and the history that made America look like a baby, but I think it’s easier to let some pictures do the talking}

I personally took all of the following photos during my study abroad adventures.

Get Me Out of Here

I have been lucky enough to travel to many places. I’ve been all over the US including San Diego, Miami, Chicago, Boston, and NYC (just to name some of the big ones). I’ve seen the ancient ruins of the Acropolis in Athens, the Globe Theater in London, and the canals of Venice. I studied abroad in Rome and soaked up every second of living in Italy.

I love to travel and experience new places, but I’ve also always loved coming home to good ol’ Maryland afterwards. That is, until I went to New Orleans. I know, I know, I’ve talked endlessly about that trip, but I can’t help it, the excitement to go was so great and the trip itself didn’t disappoint.  Something changed during that trip, something I haven’t ever really felt before. I dreaded coming home and suddenly felt confined by my all-too familiar surroundings. I want to get out! I want to not just travel somewhere new, but move somewhere new. It’s time and I know Maryland will be waiting for me when I am ready to settle and re-grow my roots.

Yup, I've got it...

It also doesn’t help that some of the blogs I read, especially the ones written by other military spouses living overseas, have given me the expat bug. I dream of living in another country! Shouldn’t we do it while we can, while the Navy will pay for our move and guarantee at least one of us a job? Shouldn’t we do it before we have kids and want to be near family? Shouldn’t we do it for the adventure and so we can look back on our lives, when we’re 80, and say “remember that time we lived in Italy/England/Germany/Japan? That was awesome!”

It's a wide open world out there

via

It doesn’t necessarily have to be a foreign country, I think I could be happy going across the country to San Diego, Hawaii or Washington State. We still have two years left in the DC-area, and available job’s in B’s field will play a huge part in where we end up, but a girl can dream, plan, and over-analyze, right?

Stuck where you are? Live vicariously through these ladies:

Amanda is a Marine wife, who lives in Okinawa, Japan

Ashley is a Navy wife, who lives is Sicily

Jessica is an Air Force wife who lives in Italy

I know it won’t be easy and at times I may think “why the hell are we here??” But I know I want to give it a shot.

Do you dream of moving somewhere?
