One of the best ways to easily mix up your workout without having to learn a whole bag of new tricks is to add the element of balance to your exercises. Balancing forces you to use stabilizing muscles and engage your core.
The easiest way to do this is to stand on one foot while you do strength exercises. This is something you can do right at home without any equipment. I usually switch my foot with each different set. Make sure to stand with your knee slightly bent and engage your ab muscles.
If you belong to a gym, they probably have a BOSU lying around. The BOSU is one of my favorite gym “props” and there are a million ways to incorporate it into your workout.
It looks like half of a stability ball with a flat side. You can stand on either the flat side or the dome side to give your body an extra kick while doing strength exercises. Stand with feet shoulder width apart, in a slight squat.
Great exercises to do on the BOSU include:
- Stand on the flat side for Bicep curls, Overhead presses and Chest Flies
- Stand on the flat side for Basic Squats
- Stand on the down side for a harder version of the Basic squat
- Sit on the dome side for Bicycle crunches
Have a happy workout!
